The issue

The Jefferson Pioneer Cemetery, an important historical site in the Jefferson area, faced significant challenges due to incomplete records and deteriorating headstones. There was an urgent need to address these issues in order to preserve the cemetery’s history and maintain its integrity.

The situation

The Jefferson Pioneer Cemetery holds significant historical value as the original cemetery for the Jefferson area. Established in the 19th century, it houses the remains of early settlers and notable figures who contributed to the growth and development of the region. However, years of neglect and inadequate record-keeping had left the cemetery in a state of disrepair. Many headstones were damaged or missing, and the records detailing the resting places of those interred were incomplete or inaccurate. This made it difficult for descendants and historians to trace their ancestors or conduct research on the cemetery’s history.

The story

With the Pioneer Cemetery in need of care and preservation, I presented the project proposal to the City Council and requested funding to engage international volunteers through Volunteers for Peace. Upon receiving the necessary approvals and support, I began coordinating with Volunteers for Peace to recruit a diverse group of volunteers from Japan, Korea, Germany, France, and Canada, ensuring the project would benefit from a rich exchange of cultures and ideas.

Local families and volunteers extended a warm welcome to the international participants by hosting a BBQ, organizing events, and arranging a trip to the Oregon coast, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. Over the course of the project, the team worked diligently to address the cemetery’s issues, including restoring damaged headstones, organizing and updating incomplete records, and preserving the historical integrity of the site.

To support the volunteers during their stay, the community provided accommodations and transportation, ensuring they had access to everything they needed. The collaboration between international and local volunteers facilitated not only the preservation of the cemetery but also a deepened appreciation for the cultural history and shared human experiences that transcend geographical boundaries.

Throughout the project, the volunteers honed their skills in historical research, restoration, and preservation, while the local community gained valuable insights into the importance of maintaining their heritage. As a result, the Pioneer Cemetery project became a symbol of international cooperation and the power of collective effort in preserving a crucial piece of local history for future generations.

The Jefferson Pioneer Cemetery project proved to be a resounding success, accomplishing years’ worth of work in just two weeks. Over 1300 headstones were meticulously documented, evaluated, and maintained, with many of them undergoing necessary repairs. This efficient and streamlined effort ensured the preservation and proper upkeep of the cemetery, while also honoring the memory of those buried there.

Beyond the tangible outcomes, the project fostered invaluable cultural exchanges and connections. International volunteers from diverse backgrounds came together, immersing themselves in one another’s cultures, forging long-lasting friendships, and creating lifelong memories. The collaboration between these dedicated individuals and the local community not only contributed to the project’s success but also fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose that transcended geographical boundaries. Reasons for success

Recognized need: The community was aware of the cemetery’s decay and the inaccuracies in burial records. This created a sense of urgency and motivation to preserve and restore the cemetery.

International interest: The arrival of about a dozen volunteers from around the world captured the community’s attention, generating enthusiasm and support for the project.

Minimal costs: The expenses were kept low, as most resources were donated or supplied by the community. The volunteers covered their own airfare, and the only additional costs were for groceries and local transportation.

Prior experience: Having volunteered in two international projects in Europe the year before, I gained invaluable knowledge on how effective such projects could be. This experience laid the groundwork for organizing and executing the Pioneer Cemetery project.

Organizational skills and team motivation: My ability to plan projects and inspire teams played a significant role in ensuring the project’s success. The combination of a clear vision and strong leadership kept the project on track and resulted in a smooth, problem-free experience.
